3 Steps to Clear Skin

About 2 years ago, I started the journey of trying to figure out how to clear my skin up. All throughout high school and the start of college, my skin never experienced any serious breakouts and I used whatever product I wanted on my skin. It wasn’t until 2017 when I started to notice that my skin was getting worse and I honestly tried every remedy under the sun to try and clear it up, but nothing was working. I went from using jojoba oil (which honestly broke me out even more) to getting a trial bottle of Curology (this cleared my skin but the ingredients were harsh and when I stopped using it, I broke out even worse than I had before.) Nothing was working! But, in December of last year, I came across a “clean skin care” video that mentioned their simple skin care routine with products that weren’t harsh but helped to clear their skin up. Eventually, that led me to watch hundreds of more Youtube videos just writing down products that I needed to test out. Starting this new skin care routine that I had complied, it took 4 months (!!!) for my skin to finally clear up and find the right combination of products to use. I thought I would share them with you in detail since my Instagram story post got so much positive feedback!

  1. Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Pure Castile Soap ($18.49)

Y’all… this is my HOLY GRAIL! When I tell you the first time I used this, my skin immediately looked better, I’m not lying! Dr. Bronner’s has been around for over 150 years and there’s a reason why! This soap is versatile and can be used for just about anything. I use it mainly as a face & body wash, and I have never had any problems! I have only tried the Lavender kind but I have heard good things about the other’s as well. For my first step in my skincare routine, I use this to wash my face in the morning and at night, and that’s all! I don’t use anything else to wash my face. Just this! Sometimes at night, I will wash my face twice to make sure that I am getting it extremely clean. Make sure that when you use this product, you are diluting it with water! What I’ve figured out, is that if you buy the 32 oz. and the 16 oz, once you get halfway through the 16 oz, you can fill it halfway with water so that it is already diluted when you go to wash your face.  (Pro tip!)

  1. Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Unscented Toner ($8.79)

After washing my face, I follow up with this toner on a cotton pad to cleanse and tone my skin. After washing your face with Dr. Bronner’s, your skin is probably going to feel a little dry and dull, that’s ok! Your skin is being completely cleaned out with that as a face-wash, so you have to follow up with a product that will restore the moisture in your skin. I would recommend getting the unscented toner because you don’t know how your skin is going to react to any added substances such as the cucumber and rose toner that this brand offers. To be honest, the rose toner broke me out so I try and stay with the most simple options that they have. I use the toner after every-time that I wash my face, in the morning and at night.

  1. Vitamin E Oil ($4.99)

Story-time: In 10th grade, probably in 9th grade is when it happened on my skin, I had a popped blood vessel under my left eye and it was super noticeable. I mean, I could have honestly left it alone but high-school Mia wanted perfect skin, so I went and saw a dermatologist and she lasered the popped blood vessel off of my face (literally I heard my skin sizzle, it was so weird and she numbed my face and it still HURT so I can only imagine what people go through when they get tattoos removed). Looking back, it sounds so extra but I’m glad that I did it because it let me to discover how great Vitamin E oil is. My dermatologist suggested that I use it every night on the spot so that it would get rid of the scarring from the blood vessel. After a month of consistently using it, my scar went away and I stopped using Vitamin E oil altogether. I had a lot of acne scars when I started this skincare journey and I remember what I had been told so I implemented it back into my routine. I use Vitamin E oil every single night as the last step of my skincare routine. I make sure to apply 6 drops all over my face before my toner seeps into my skin for easy application. Yes, your face is going to be sooo oily, that’s ok. Overnight, your skin is going to absorb all of this Vitamin E, promoting moisture and healing to any acne scars or blemishes that you may have. Don’t be intimidated if you already have oily skin, this product is going to help with that oil. In the morning, your face will have absorbed all of it but you may notice that there is still oil left, that’s ok! That is why you must wash your face with Dr. Bronner’s and follow up with the toner and then your moisturizer. I use Clinique Moisture Surge ($39.00 [a little pricey, but worth it.. a little goes a long way]). I have also heard good things about Kiehls Daily Moisturizer ($29.50) and First Aid Beauty Moisturizer ($24.00). You want to try and use as clean as products (especially moisturizers) as you can find!

I created some cheat sheets of my entire morning and evening routines if you want to save them to your phone or your notes as a reminder! 

Bonus Tips:

  • Be aware of what you are putting on your skin!
    • A lot of these products contain harmful chemicals that may have you seeing results now, but are ultimately not good for you! I experienced this when using Curology.
  • Use face masks sparingly!
    • Make sure that you know exactly what you are putting on your skin and if that product works well with your routine. I have started to stray away from face masks because I feel like Dr. Bronner’s does a really good job of keeping my skin completely clean. Sometimes, I will use Yes to Cucumbers Face Mask Sheets ($3.99) if I want to try something new on my skin.
  • Wash your pillowcase every single week!
    • At night, when you have the vitamin E oil on your face, your skin cleanses itself and all of that extra dirt/bacteria coming out of your skin sits on your pillowcase. I make sure to throw mine in with my delicates load every week when I do my laundry to make sure that I am starting the week fresh with a clean pillowcase.
  • Stop drying your face with your towel!
    • To be honest, I have started to dry my face with a paper towel or Kleenex Hand Paper Towels ($2.99). I know its not the most environmentally friendly option, but you want to make sure that you are keeping your skin as clean as possible and from any bacteria that may come from your towel. You could also have a towel specifically for your face but I would suggest going with just paper towels that you can dispose of. Or, sometimes I don’t dry my face at all! I let the water drip off and absorb into my skin.
  • Stop touching your face!
    • You might not notice how much you touch your face, but it probably happens more often than you would think. Make sure that you are trying not to touch your face throughout the day because this can bring unwanted bacteria and cause breakouts.
  • Clean your phone at least once a week!
    • Your phone can honestly be a breeding ground for bacteria and making sure to keep it clean especially if you talk on the phone a lot is important.
  • Wash. your. makeup. brushes/beauty blenders. every. single. week.
    • If you wear makeup every day, or even a couple times a week, you need to make sure that you are washing your brushes! Your brushes can harvest a lot of build-up of makeup and its crucial to keep them clean every single week. Be mindful that you are discarding makeup that you’ve had for a while, because a lot of products aren’t good over a year of keeping them.
  • Stop using makeup wipes.
    • This one can be hard because makeup wipes are so convenient but in my experience, they break me out especially after cleaning my skincare routine up. I try to use micellar water (sometimes) but Dr. Bronner’s removes mostly all of any makeup that I have on my face. I especially make sure to wash my face twice if I wear makeup that day.


    • Your skin is not going to clear up overnight, and it for sure won’t clear up in 2 weeks. It took me up to a month to start seeing real results. You have to be patient with your skin and ultimately find what works for you. You can ask my sisters, I have tried A LOT of different products and they have been following this journey with me and I got them to try my current routine and their skin is starting to see results! Trust me, if you do this faithfully for a month, you are going to see some sort of result but you have to be disciplined and not cheat yourself. Be strict with how you are treating your skin! Additionally, what works for me may not work for you, but it’s important to be aware with how you are treating your skin and what you are doing to try and keep it as clean as possible. I hope that these tips encourage you to throw out your products that may contain harmful chemicals that could be leading to your breakouts. (Don’t get me started on Neutrogena, Biore, and Clean & Clear) I know that these products above aren’t completely clean BUT they are affordable options that are the cleanest that I could find.
